Mayor Lois Frankel has been a positive voice in the West Palm Beach community since 1974.
She started her public service career as an attorney and was a founder of West Palm Beach’s first domestic assault shelter now known as Harmony House. She also helped to establish, and later became president of, the Palm Beach County Association of Women Lawyers.
In 1986, Ms. Frankel, or “Lois” as she is known by residents, was elected to the Florida House of Representatives where she served for fourteen years, rising to the position of Minority Leader, the first Democratic woman in Florida history to achieve such an honor.
While in the legislature, then Representative Frankel earned a reputation for being an energetic champion of Florida's children, seniors, and working families. She led efforts to reduce family violence and tackle the tobacco industry's targeting of minors.
Ms. Frankel was elected Mayor of West Palm Beach in March of 2003 and re-elected by a wide margin in March 2007. She currently serves as the chief executive officer of Palm Beach County’s largest and busiest city.
A familiar face handing out cookies at city concerts or presiding over a host of public events from Clematis by Night to Kaleidoscope, the people’s mayor has made quality of life a priority for the City of West Palm Beach.
Now, in her second term, Ms. Frankel is successfully promoting an energetic agenda with budgets focusing on increased public safety. Under her administration, major progress has been made cleaning up blighted neighborhoods, revitalizing downtown and its waterfront, and modernizing the city’s water system. She and her team received accolades for leading the city through three hurricanes with a rapid return to both services and communications vital to citizens.
On a personal note, Lois Frankel was born in New York. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Boston University and earned a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. She moved to West Palm Beach in 1974 where she began her law practice and started her family. The Mayor has one child, a son, Benjamin, who is a reserve Captain in the United States Marines. The Mayor serves as a mentor through the Take Stock in Children Program. Mayor Frankel is an avid modernist painter and enjoys golfing in her leisure time.
